On Sept. 25, Dine Out to Help Out NY-Area Farmers Affected by Hurricane Irene
Many local farms, it has been reported, suffered extensive and sometimes catastrophic damages when Hurricane Irene swept up the East Coast the weekend before last. In the wake of the storm, some organizations began raising funds to aid the affected farmers. And now, there's another way to help. 
On September 25, some 30 restaurants across the city will participate in Dine Out Irene, a one-night fundraiser organized by food writers Gabriella Gershenson, Kat Kinsman, Rachel Wharton, and Adam Sachs, as well as New Amsterdam Market founder Robert Lavalva. The event's participants will donate up to 10 percent of their sales to GrowNYC and Just Food, which will in turn distribute the proceeds directly to farmers affected by the storm.
So far, the restaurants that have signed on include Red Farm, Northern Spy Food Co., Buttermilk Channel, and Telepan -- all of which is to say that for farms and diners alike, this is a win-win situation.
