Ingredients: Añejo tequila, mezcal, sage agave nectar, cherry bark and vanilla bitters, served on the rocks
The buzz: "Just follow the birds," they say. That's how you find this dim-lit cocktail den secreted deep in the far recesses of a bright, brash, and scene-y rooftop lounge. (Birds on the walls lead you there, like bread crumbs.) Once you're inside, white-tube-top-clad waitresses give way to serious bartenders crafting serious cocktails. Like this little number, an aromatic, savory sipper with a hint of baking spice on the finish. Not at all what you'd expect from a drink whose first two ingredients read, "tequila and mezcal." Instead of smoke and bite, there's a soft saline quality and sweet aromas of Christmas in the glass. And yet, it's light and refreshing, going down far too easy. In fact, it's not really serious at all. More than one and you risk the temptation to run back up to the rooftop for some navel-gazing and fist-pumping action. So, sip easy, friends.
