Chilewich Sample Sale at 261 West 36th Street to Run Two More Days
Even if you've never heard of it before, you're surrounded by Chilewich. This company developed a proprietary method of weaving plastic, and then invented uses for it. One that you've probably seen again and again in restaurants is the Chilewich place mat.
But why Chilewich? The place mats are exceedingly durable, and ultra-washable, either with a damp sponge or in the dishwasher. At retail, these run from $12 to $15 apiece, but at the yearly sample sale you can get them for a mere $5 each -- along with purses, throw rugs, mud mats, dog-bowl rugs, and dinner-table runners. And if you don't know what the last thing is, you're better off -- it's about as useful as one of those furry toilet-seat covers.
The sale occurs only once a year at Clothingline, and the first day is almost behind us. But don't worry -- there are plenty of remainders left, and the first day of the sale has become awful, with lines around the block. By the second and third days, the feeding frenzy will have calmed down. Hours are 10 a.m. till 6 p.m. on Wednesday, 10 a.m. till 7 p.m. on Thursday.
