Happy Hour at Burp Castle

Don't try this at home.

On a street lined with loud pubs, at least one tucked-away bar promises quiet respite.

That place is Burp Castle. Though the name suggests boozy, bro-laden belchfests, the locale -- which boasts an impressive beer menu -- has a calm, low-key vibe.

Thankfully, the bartenders try to keep it that way: If you get too loud, they'll shush you immediately.

This makes it easy to enjoy a brew or two, many of which come from Belgium. Non-Flemish picks abound, such as Hitachino Ginger Ale and Radeberger Pilsner.

The list rotates, but you can usually count on at least one lambic.

Monday through Friday, tap selections cost $1 less from 5 to 8 p.m.

They don't shush you anymore; that was when they still work the monk robes or maybe they were actually monks. But after the one gentleman died, they stopped with that. They don't even have the signs up anymore about being quiet. They don't even have the same number of beers anymore.

I was in there several weeks ago. While there are no monk robes, they did ask me to be quiet when a friend and I were having a slightly loud conversation.

it used to be a top beer destination, now it's just mediocre.
