Burger King's New French Fries: A Review

P1030251x.jpg
The brand-new fries at Burger King have been rolled out.

Burger King has made a big fuss over its new fries, the first reformulation of that product since 1998, when the extra crispy and starchy fries were introduced. This time around, the fries are thicker, for the purpose of extra heat retention, and supposedly covered with a heat-retaining coating, too. (What could it be? asbestos?)

Part of the hoopla was a free-french-fry giveaway at all participating Burger Kings last Friday, in which everyone was promised a Value Size serving -- while supplies last, of course.

I was not a fan of the earlier Burger King fries, because I thought they were often undercooked and underbrowned, and they seemed to have some sort of spray-on coating.

I'm afraid the new formula is not much of an overall improvement. The fries have moved in the direction of Greek diner fries, thick and starchy without being satisfying. They taste like they've been frozen, too, with that dank flavor that no amount of grease can dispel. Moreover, the new paucity of salt leads you to pay more attention to the grease these things are fried in. I don't know what it is, but I bet I could lube my bike with it.

Alas, McDonald's are still superior.

New fries are soooo gross and plain. theyre old fries were awesome and the best ive ever had. I am boycotting bk till they bring back the old ones. The person who had the bright idea to change them needs to be slapped!

I agree, these fries are horrible.  McD is still better.

I want the original BK fries. They really rivaled McD's fries. I actually liked BK's original fries better than McD's.

I was Addicted to the old Thinner Salty Shoestring fries at BK.  I used to work next door & would go over just for a big bag of fries...with a bit of salt..no ketchup.   I tried the New Thick Fries & thought they were nasty.  They had no flavor & were very dry.  I had to ad a bunch more salt & could only eat them drizzled with Ketchup & Mayo. no Thanks ! I Won't be going back to BK for now & hope they change back.  For now its McDonald's & Jack in the Box.

Burger kings new fries suck nobody I know likes them my whole family (who has tried them and I've talked to) say they suck none of my friends or family nor I go to Burger king anymore. Best fries are at chick fila and checkers and boardwalk in my opinon. But Mcdonalds fries are beyond better than Burger kings now. Which sucks because I'm pregnant and would get BK fries with onion ring sause but not anymore. Sad. They should go back to the old fries.

I've ordered the onion rings for the past few years...never liked the "seasoned" fries....today I ordered the fries to give the new ones a try.....thumbs up....I like them....they are kind of "retro" ...pre-McDonalds....good potato taste...thick but not too thick....everyone in my party liked them too....what are these other people talking about them being yuckkee and tastless.....Jim

Bk used to be my once a week fast food break. The new fries are terrible. They ruined my weekly splurge. Where to go now :-(

Huge step backward. I used to love the fries. Now I just go to McD's. Too bad.

They taste exactly the same as before. Maybe a little worse. :o. Burger King fries have always tasted like somebody stuck their finger up a butt and then stuck it in my mouth. YUCK.

I felt a bit of dread at hearing Burger King had new fries but I set aside my feelings assuming that, 'They're a major chain they won't muff this up'.

How wrong I was.

The new fries are atrocious. I actually avoid BK now where before I'd go for variety. I LOVED the unique flavor of their fries and now...blech.

Go back to the old fries BK. ASAP!

My daughter and I tried the BK fries for the 1st time and they were AWFUL!!!! I used to prefer the older version over McD's but now HEK NO!!!! They are too thick and are not well cooked.

THEY NEED TO BRING BACK THE THINNER FRIES THAT HAD A NICE TASTE AND CRISP TO THEM...;-)

The old fries had a unique flavor that i loved, and i even prefered them over McDonalds. The old fries had tons of fans and they actually competed against McDonals, and the new Wendys fries. The new ones are HORRIBLE. They taste like they were in the freezer for days, then fried in used oil. They taste like cardboard. PLEASE GO BACK TO YOUR OLD FRIES. These are horrible!

Completely agree.  The "new" fries are flavorless and mushy.  I'll take McDonald's fries.

Got the new fries for the first time today.  They are awful.  BK go back to the thinner fries.

BK your fries are no good, the thin ones were better. They used to rival McD's, but not now! Thin fries will taste better 90% of the time unless you do something really different, and the coating is NOT enough (different).  I don't want a frie that will make me thirsty in the middle of one bite, it's not going to make me buy more soda, just no fries. So now I will only order onion rings or just go to McD's.

I had lunch, which included fries, at a Burger King on Monday. I liked the fries, as much as I like the fries at McDonald's.

An aside: I didn't want a lot of fries or much to drink so I ordered a small order of fries and a small soft drink. I hadn't been to a Burger King in a while so I didn't remember that the smallest size is value size, not small, and while I didn't struggle to finish the fries, I had plenty of soda left over. (This particular Burger King didn't list everything on its displayed menu. Fuckers. I should inform the Departments of Consumer Affairs and Health about their menu.)

I also got the freebies last Friday. I still prefer McD's fries. BK's are too thick cut, 'artificial' looking (in a bad fast food sort of way) and the reduced sodium is a disservice to fast food fries, really. If you're going to be a fast food dish, make it a good one and not go the 'healthy' route. Fries are never healthy, so learn that a little goes a long way, but make it decadent and worth it.

I worked in McD's when the fries were really good. Fresh potatoes were peeled in a nifty drum peeler, pounds at a time. They were cut with a hand operated gizmo, one potato at a time. Then blanched and set aside until the final fry got them crispy. Just like in the best bistro in Paris. Unfortunately this was during the '60's. I'm not sure when they went to frozen, but they have been mediocre at best ever since.
