Fish Might Keep Your Brain Working Swimmingly: Study

Chicken of the sea might beef up your brain: Researchers have found that diets high in fish and vegetables might prevent your gray matter from shrinking with age.

As detailed in December's Neurology, these foods -- high in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins D,C,E, and B -- have been linked to healthy brain size in elderly people, according to NPR.

The findings are part of a recent study in which scientists decided to pool 104 volunteers in their golden years and test their brain function, as well as run MRIs to measure brain size.

Participants who ate a lot of trans-fat-loaded junk tended to experience cerebral shrinkage and memory loss and do worse on thinking tests than their fish-loving counterparts, NPR notes.

Researchers want to do more studies to confirm their findings. They want to have a more diverse experimental group, and they also want to see whether resveratrol (the antioxidant in red wine) and other nutrients in fruits and nuts have any similar benefits.

Nothing new about that "finding." Been hearing/reading about it since I was in Grade K -- five decades ago. It's just like the numerous other rehashed "health discoveries" that get repackaged as "new" every few years to help justify research grant money.
