Mother Trucker! Tractor-Trailer Rule Could Up Food Costs

Something that could keep you from dying in a gruesome, fiery auto accident could also make your groceries more expensive.

Congress wants to limit truck drivers' time behind the wheel -- from 11 hours to 10 hours, according to BusinessWeek -- and is considering a regulation to do so.

Legislators say the change could help prevent deaths -- since overworked, exhausted truckers obviously could fall asleep on the road.

In a U.S. House subcommittee meeting Wednesday, logistics industry officials warned lawmakers that the change could make food more expensive, since shipping would cost at least 3 percent more.

"This industry operates on a razor-thin margin," an industry rep told reporters. "Any increase in operating costs will have to be passed on to customers in the form of higher prices."
