No Beans! Chili Dog Goes Upscale at Dickson's Farmstand Meats
In common with other purveyors in Chelsea Market, Dickson's has been vying to lure the tourist hordes who descend upon the complex -- a former Nabisco factory -- in search not of foodie raw materials, but of prepared foods that can be immediately consumed. Earlier, Dickson's has displayed pre-made sandwiches in the window, and flogged steam-table selections at lunchtime, but now maybe they've hit on the perfect formula: hot dogs elevated from trashy to wholesome.
The all-beef franks are locally sourced, natural-skinned, and faintly smoky. The dog fully loaded is topped with meat-only chili (you expect beans from a butcher?), pickled peppers in three colors (green, yellow, and red), and a squirt of mayo. It's an aristocrat among chili dogs, and probably worth its $5 price tag. It certainly would be hard to eat more than one.
