Mezcal and gin: Dios mio!
The drink: La Grita de Dolores

The bar: Viktor & Spoils (105 Rivington Street, Lower East Side, 212-475-3485)

The price: $14

The ingredients: Crema de Mezcal, Tanqueray 10, and Bittermans Chocolate Mole bitters, stirred and garnished with a grapefruit peel.

The buzz: The much-ballyhooed $69 cocktail at Viktor & Spoils may have been too rich for our blood, but this little number was just right. We were intrigued by the ingredients: mezcal and gin? La Grita translates as "the outcry," and surely whoever Dolores is must have voiced her concern when she learned the two spirits were to be mixed. Each on its own has been known to incite an "ew" from many a drinker, so the combo was sure to be an assault on the taste buds, right? Quite the contrary. The concoction was ethereal, botanically intoxicating, and overall silky-soft. Not as popular, it would seem from sitting at the bar, as its darker counterpart, La Vida Buena, another fine drink. But more enchanting, more surprising. Credit to the crema. Sip it with some homemade-chorizo tacos (the chef got a taco schooling from the skilled Sue Torres), super-spicy cacahuetes, or cheesy elote. Or just by itself as you smirk at the schmuck who spent 70 bucks on his drink.
