The Curly & the Turk at the Tippler

Each week in The Daily Shot, we have ourselves a drink that we think you should try, too.

The drink: Curly & the Turk

The bar: The Tippler (425 West 15th Street, 212-206-0000)

The price: $11

The ingredients: G'Vine gin, blue curacao, lemon juice, hibiscus syrup, chile, Moroccan bitters

The buzz: The Tippler, the bar located in the basement of Chelsea Market and run by Tippling Bros. founders Tad Carducci and Paul Tanguay, opened this past fall, featuring a menu of intriguing cocktails, lushies (a/k/a alcoholic slushies), and oddball shots (Averna amaro and orange soda, for example). Yet one of the most entertaining drinks on the menu is the turquoise-and-violet-hued Curly & the Turk, so named after the two owners' children. A highball is filled with a layer of hibiscus-chile syrup, then filled with crushed ice and topped with blue curacao-spiked gin. Blue drinks have a notoriously bad rap, oft relegated to spring-break bonanzas, but there's really no difference between clear and blue curacao, save for food coloring. Why not indulge your inner Girl Gone Wild child with this bright blue drink? It is, after all, made to resemble the childhood ice cream truck staple Rocket Pops. Only this one puts you in a better, buzzier mood after you've polished it off.
