Michelle Obama Suggests Updating Military Chow to Curb Obesity

Categories: Edible News

Michelle Obama stopped by the Pentagon today to announce a new obesity awareness campaign for the military, according to Reuters. The plan will require stocking all 1,100 American military mess halls with more fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat food, and will affect 1.45 million troops.

At the Pentagon meeting, Obama expressed her concern over a recent Army study that says more than one-quarter of 17- to 24-year-olds are too overweight for military service. A Pentagon official said that some soldiers already in the service are getting a bit too big for optimal performance as well.

The military is going to rethink its menus and supply healthier food in vending machines and snack bars on its bases. Perhaps the Pentagon officials could invest in a LiVe vending machine, which features an automated voice that chastises customers for their snack-food obsessions and then doesn't give out any food. Check out this video of how it works.
