Tacombi Sets Up a Wee Cart in Chelsea Market

The messy-but-tasty corn taco

Tacombi at Fonda Nolita, the popular Nolita taqueria, recently branched out to feed office workers and culinary amblers at Chelsea Market. Unlike the airy, cavernous flagship -- complete with its taco-dispensing VW bus -- this new outpost operates out of a wee cart with a more limited menu.

We stopped by for a barbacoa taco, which features braised short rib in pastilla chile sauce, and also nabbed a sweet corn taco dotted with cojita cheese. Unlike at the Nolita location, you won't be able to find any of the fish or seafood tacos, likely due to a lack of cooking facilities. Each went for $4, which is what they cost at the original location, though still not totally cheap since you really want at least two and really three to feel full.

The barbacoa had nice flavor with hints of spice, although the meat was slightly dry. The messier corn taco, meanwhile, tasted of sweet summer kernels. A couple tables are available for seating, but as the lines of office workers illustrated, it's more of a to-go spot. Verdict: There are better spots for noshing in Chelsea Market, but if you're absolutely craving Mexican, it's the shopping center's best bet.
