Year of the Takeout Day 86: Canal Best Restaurant

WHO KNOWS? from Canal Best Restaurant (266 Canal Street, 212-274-1536)

If anyone could ID this -- described in the photo below -- Year of the Takeout would be greatly appreciative. It was quite good, but we really had no idea what we were eating -- except for the sausage and green onion and (maybe) fried squid -- and a language barrier prevented us from finding out.

It looks quite similar to the Jicama Siu-Chow at Ping's - which might be a fancified version of this dish.

Thank you guys so much, I really appreciate your help.

I can't be more emphatic in recommending this dish. The juxtaposition of slightly sweet sausage and salty, fried fish -- sauteed with hearty greens in a light, soy-based sauce -- creates a rarely encountered flavor combo.

Hello. The mandarin pronunciation for this dish is "yin yu la wei xiao chao wang." It means something to the effect of "stir fried silver fish with Chinese style dried sausage." Hope this helps.

To be more specific, the "silver fish" is also known as "oriental whitebait." It's very popular in Chinese cuisine.
