Paulaner Brewery Is Opening an Enormous Flagship Brauhaus on the Bowery

paulaner_logo.jpeg

Soon after we posted our list of the city's 5 best beer halls, we got word from Bowery Boogie that Paulaner Brewery, the Bavarian brew giant, is planning to open a massive flagship beer hall on the Bowery.

The place will span 4,000 square feet, making it smaller than Williamsburg's Radegast Hall and Biergarten, but enormous by Manhattan standards. It'll open in time for Oktoberfest, when the brauhaus competition will be on. We'll still be rooting for the little guys.

God I hate what the Bowery has become.....and I say that as someone who does not hate beer halls..........just what the Bowery has become.

Well, I don't consider myself much of a pollyanna when it comes to New York, but I can't really agree with this.  It was only a few generations or so ago that the Bowery was filled with human misery from end to end -- where people went mostly to suffer and die in poverty.  Today, the southern part has become an interesting and vibrant immigrant community, and the northern part has some pretty interesting food stores and restaurants, and decent places to live -- it might not be super edgy, but it hasn't become a 42nd Street style tourist ghetto.

I prefer the beer hall to the human suffering, and like it better today than how it used to be -- but then again I really like beer.
