New Amsterdam Market Fighting for Permanent Space
The New Amsterdam Market is a seasonal market that runs out a parking lot beside the former Fulton Fish Market, featuring vendors that offer regional cheese, jams, bread, and fish. NAM have been around off and on since 2007, all the time working toward claiming a permanent space and year-round market for the city. Lately, the fight has been for the Fulton Fish Market.
However, according to DNA Info, "a grassroots effort by market organizers to move into the abandoned Tin Building and New Market Building has hit a wall with real estate giant Howard Hughes Corp. The company has first rights to develop the city-owned properties after signing a non-binding letter of intent with the city's Economic Development Corporation, according to both sides."
A decision has yet to be made on the market, but developers already have plans to gut the space and replace it with small shops, big-box stores, a rooftop lawn, and a concert hall.
