Lately at Fork in the Road, we've been doing a lot of pieces on sweet treats, from our 10 best ice creams, to frozen salty licorice bars, to frozen kefir. Which got me thinking about my favorite dessert spots in the East Village. There are so many, it was hard to narrow it down to just five! But here are my current favorites:

Cha-An

5. Cha-An: It's hard not to be impressed by this cutesy Japanese tea room. Order the Chef's Dessert Assortment, where you can select three individual desserts for $17. The black sesame creme brulee (pictured above) is a must. 230 E. Ninth St., 212-228-8030

ChikaLicious

4. ChikaLicious: There are so many selections in this walk-in dessert bar that it can get a bit confusing. It's a great place to hit up if you're with people who crave a variety of sweets. There's shaved ice, cupcakes, ice cream, and macarons. Name it and they probably have it. Pictured above is the delectable banana pudding. 203 E. 10th St. New York, 212-475-0929

Tejal Rao
Momofuku Milkbar

3. Momofuku Milk Bar: Ah. It's hard to write a favorite list without including Christina Tosi's famous Milk Bar. It's the place to go for a eclectic selection of desserts and pastries: kimchi foccacia, English muffin with tempura-fried egg, and of course, their cereal milk soft-serve. 251 E. 13th St., 212-254-3500

Puddin NYC

2. Puddin': When we first walked into Puddin,' a grown man sampling a pudding cup screamed with delight, "It tastes like crack!" Indeed the pudding concoctions they whip up here can be addictive. Think cups filled with chocolate, vanilla, and butterscotch custards. The portions are small, but if you're feeling up for a splurge, Puddin' is a good choice. 102 St. Marks Place, 212-477-3537

Butter Lane Cupcakes

1. Butter Lane Cupcakes: What sets Butter Lane apart from the legions of cupcake bakeries in the city is their scrumptious frosting. According to their website, they use both French and American buttercream icing. You choose from an vast array of frosting flavors, and for the cake options you have your basic chocolate, vanilla, and banana. Our favorites: salted caramel on vanilla and honey on banana. Mmm. 123 E 7th St., (212) 677-2880

All overpriced and overrated trendy spots.

Instead, try Black Hound, Veniero's, Veselka's bakery, Moishe's, etc.  Also for ice cream, Sundaes & Cones.
