Cisco Brewers Whale's Tale Pale Ale from Nantucket, MA

Serving style: Bottle, poured into glass

Location: My apartment

Cost: $14 a six-pack

ABV: 5.6 %

Appearance: The Whale's Tale Pale Ale is, unfortunately, not blue like the tail on the label. Instead, it pours a soft, hazy copper fluid with a minimal cap, one that's about 1 inch until fizzing away after about 30 seconds. It's a pretty brew, and so is the bottle: Simple, clean, and minimal.

Aroma: Initially, the beer comes off a bit on the plain side, emitting an even scent of both herbal hops and bready malt, so it's not too pungent. But if you let your nose linger for a moment, you can pick up on some sweetness rising from the ale, which I didn't notice till my second glass.

Taste: Crisp, clean, and refreshing--and actually, the Whale's Tale Pale Ale (I could say that name over and over again and just not tire of it) is much sweeter than expected. It comes out in the fruitiness, an American twist on a traditionally English style, through lemon and citrus flavors. Even though it may go against certain schools of thought when it comes to pale ales, I recommend serving the Whale's Tale as cold as possible. Like, ice, ice cold. It's just such a pleasant drink, perfect for a sticky July night, and the cooler the brew, the easier it is to experience the fullness of the fruity flavor.

Mouthfeel: Like its flavor, the body is light--which comes as a bit of a surprise too, since the ABV isn't a small amount (5.6 percent). The carbonation, distributed evenly, holds for a fair amount of time. Out of all the categories though, this was the Whale's Tale Pale Ale's most average.

Overall Experience: This beer from Cisco Brewers is simple and delightful. If you're looking for something with a bit more of a punch, stray away from it. But a solid brew that will put a little pep in your step? The Whale's Tale Pale Ale is it. Plus, my roommate and I made our way through a six-pack during last night's derecho and survived, so it's official: The Whale's Tale Pale Ale is not only delicious, it has the power to power to defeat hurricane winds. Or, at least, make you forget that hurricane winds are blowing outside your window as you act like super-mature adults by guzzling beer and playing FIFA.
