This gentlepig, who stands outside Rudy's Bar and Grill, is the unofficial mayor of Hell's Kitchen.

Extending from 34th Street to 56th Street and including everything from Eighth Avenue to the Hudson River, Hell's Kitchen is one of the most difficult assignments for restaurant rankers. The sheer number of restaurants is bewildering, but the fact that many are not very good means that dining around with no scorecard can be incredibly disappointing.

Indeed, there are at least 40 Thai restaurants alone, a number that is equaled only by the tally of Italian restaurants that bunch on nearly every block. The vast range of ethnicities represented make Hell's Kitchen the Adams Morgan of Manhattan - referring to a region of Washinton, DC famous for its mediocre ethnic restaurants.

So, trust your pals at Fork in the Road to sift and rank the enormous number of choices, and tune in bright and early tomorrow morning to learn the results. And have your own choices at the ready in case there are great places we've missed.

In the meantime, check out our library of 10 Bests.
