Welcome to 100 Dishes to Eat Now, the tasty countdown leading up to our "Best of 2012" issue. Tune in each day (weekends too!) for a new dish from the Fork in the Road team.

Bhel Puri, $3.29

Parathas are cooked to order at this friendly, Indian snack shop on Lexington Avenue. A few chaats are available, like a bhel puri of puffed rice and crispy sev, which you should eat immediately, before the crispy bits get soaked through with tamarind and green chutney. Head downstairs to the dining room that's been bejazzled with giant rhinestones and paisleys, where a rose wilts on every table and Bollywood music (like the endless title ballad from Kal Ho Naa Ho) might be playing. Make sure you dig in to mix up the onions and tomatoes hiding at the bottom.

I hate when food critics give me directions on how I SHOULD be eating my meal.

Wow. Good to know where to get bhel puri. My buddy took me to eat it once at some Indian deli like establishment. It's kind of like savory rice crispies. Good stuff even though I'm pretty sure that Indian deli establishment isn't as good.
