Sweet Plantains and Oxtail Soup in Washington Heights

It was pouring rain, and I was dreaming about soup (again).

I was soaked as I pedaled to Washington Heights but kept the thought of Margot's sancocho in mind -- the Dominican restaurant make its rich stew with oxtail meat.

After a few misunderstandings with my rusty Spanish, I dug into that soup along with arroz con gandules (rice and pigeon peas, $5), berenjena (stewed eggplant $5), and maduros (sweet plantains $2.50). Everything was so cheap, and so satisfying.

This restorative sweet drink is the Morir SoƱando. It tasted like a creamsicle, but it means "to die dreaming."
