What's Happening This Week: Fatty Crab Boil, Omnivore Food Festival

Crab Boil. Fatty Crew Hospitality Group announces the seventh anniversary of Fatty Crab this month. To celebrate, the restaurant will be hosting a Maryland-style crab boil from September 17 through October 17. It's serving blue crabs with "Malay old bay" seasoned water, steamed corn and potatoes, long pepper-lemon crab broth, and toast. A side plate of chicharrons, sliced lemon, mustard greens, herbs, banana flower, and pickled garlic will round out the menu, finished by mochi cake and vanilla ice cream for only $49 per person.
Wednesday, September 19
Hunger Hits Home. Marc Murphy will be hosting in collaboration with Share Our Strength a charitable movie screening of Hunger Hits Home. Guest will enjoy beers from Brooklyn Brewery along with wine and specialty cocktails from Southern Wine and Spirits, and a post-discussion meet and greet featuring Food Network's Ted Allen and executive chef and restaurant owner Marc Murphy among other notable panel members. It's from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Tribeca Cinemas. Tickets are $100, and RSVP is required because space is limited.
Free booze. From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Virgil's bar will dole out free cocktails, including Malibu Mojitos and Virgil's brand new Absolut Vodka Cherrykran Lemonade.
International Talk Like a Pirate Day. In celebration of the 10th annual "International Talk Like a Pirate Day", the Rooftop Terrace of Aretsky's Patroon Townhouse will become a pirate's haven, offering its patrons a free specialty rum cocktail and Pirate's Booty All Natural Baked Rice and Corn Puff Snacks . . . all it takes to get them is one word from you to the bartenders - "ARRR!"
Thursday, September 20
Joy of Sake. The 12th annual Joy of Sake will be held on Thursday, September 20, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Altman Building at 135 West 18th Street in Chelsea. Tickets are $90 in advance or $100 at the door and can be purchased online at joyofsake.com or by calling the Sake hotline at 808-222-0195. There will be 360 labels on display and appetizers from 15 of the city's best Japanese and contemporary restaurants.
Friday, September 21
Omnivore Food Festival. The Omnivore Food Festival is happening September 21 through the 23. It's filled with both celebrity chefs from around the world and locals expressing their love for food. During the three days, Omnivore will pay tribute to the underground cuisine, the pop-ups, the food trucks, and fine dining of NYC with plenty events for the whole family. Details are on its website.
Sunday, September 23
Taste the West Village. In partnership with American Express and more than 25 restaurants in the neighborhood, Taste the West Village will be hosting a day of food and fun to help raise money for the West Village's P.S. 41. Held in the Yard at P.S. 41, guests will enjoy food from notable chefs like Michael Anthony of Gramercy Tavern, Marc Murphy of Ditch Plains, and Daniel Holzman and Michael Chernow of the Meatball Shop, and from some new and notable West Village hot spots like Rosemary's and Swine. Tickets start at $45.
Fish Butchery. The New Amsterdam Market's cooking series with Local Roots and chef Will Griffin continues with Fish Butchery. The skills you learn at this hands-on workshop will allow you to buy whole fish from the market instead of pre-cut fillets and portions. Two two-hour sessions are available, and tickets are available here.
