The King of Fried Chicken Sandwiches

Dish #17, what a mighty fine bun

Welcome to 100 Dishes to Eat Now, the tasty countdown leading up to our "Best of 2012" issue. Tune in each day (weekends too!) for a new dish from the Fork in the Road team.

The fried chicken at Keedick Coulter's friendly little counter on Avenue C is lovely. Crunchy and tender, sweet and salty, juicy all the way through. It's the sort of fried chicken we deserve, but rarely find in New York. Bobwhite soaks the birds in sweet tea, dredges them in flour and spices, then fries them under pressure. And the kitchen's technique is sharp. Piping hot, layered in a super-soft grilled bun with thinly sliced bread and butter pickles it makes for a remarkably good sandwich ($8.50).
