Greenmarket Returns to Union Square After Sandy

Since Sandy, the overwhelmingly abundant Union Square Greenmarket has been closed down (and infiltrated by) swarms of Con Ed workers and other utility professionals. Reports now suggest that the market will reopen this week.

Grab your reusable tote bags -- it's shopping time.

While we can all rejoice in knowing that we can finally pick up some Cucurbita pepo (or heirloom winter squash), the market's farmers will be even happier to get back to business. During the week, Union Square features some 40 distributors in its park. On Saturdays, the number of farmers doubles. The Times reports that even though many farmers were able to take up temporary residence in Madison Square Park, they still "lost several million dollars during the last couple of weeks."

If all goes according to plan, the market should be open tomorrow or, at the latest, by Friday. [NYT]
