Concessions Will Return to Rockaways This Summer

It might be hard to get tourists out to Rockaway Beach this summer, but concessions will be there even if the boardwalk might not be.

At the Community Board 14 meeting on Tuesday night, the Queens Park Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski told the crowd that some amenities like lifeguards, bathrooms, and concessions would be back in time for summer 2013.

For the past few years Rockaway Beach became a hot spot for trendy edibles. The Meat Hook and Roberta's spent summer 2011 creating a beach bar. Caracas and Blue Bottle Coffee sold arepas and caffeine. Beloved Rockaway Taco served up unbeatable fish tacos for years, and Back Forty even had three nights of crab boils last summer.

According to Rockaway Help, the Parks Department is creating small "islands" in front of comfort stations, concession stands, and parks offices to replace portions of the boardwalk that Hurricane Sandy took with her.

It may not be perfect, but with the devastation the Rockaways have faced, a summer with beach treats is good news.
