Just before the new year, Whole Earth Bakery and Kitchen closed on St. Mark's Place. After 34 years in business, even a crowdfunding campaign couldn't save the vegan bakery that owner Peter Silvestri and his mother founded. Silvestri posted a goodbye note on Facebook and said, "There will be a mourning period but there are good aspects as well as negative aspects to everything and we are trusting the process." 130 St. Mark's Pl.
After a few weeks in limbo, the Lenox Lounge officially closed on New Year's Eve after the landlord doubled the space's rent. The legendary jazz club is now owned by Richie Notar of Nobu Restaurants Group. In this week's Village Voice Matthew Kassel remembers the Harlem club. 288 Lenox Ave.
Hurricane Sandy took hold of Almondine's kitchen in Dumbo and never let go. The kitchen there was destroyed, and South Slope News reported that the Park Slope location had a "for rent" sign hanging in the space's window. 442 9th St., Brooklyn
