You read it right -- pastrami sandwiches for only $2.50 each.

A street cart parked at the southeast corner of 72nd Street and Broadway, the crossroads of the Upper West Side, has started outflanking area delis by offering a hot pastrami sandwich at the incredible price of $2.50. Typical pastrami sandwich cost in the neighborhood: $15.

The sandwich can hardly be called overstuffed, but then did you really want to eat 1,500 calories at lunch (the typical calorie count for an overstuffed pastrami sandwich)?

The cart is called City Halal Food, and it typically sells donuts, coffee, bagels, Danish, and, at lunch, falafel, grilled chicken, and kufta.

Yet, Fork in the Road readily copped one of the new pastrami sandwiches at 11 a.m. It was served on a roll, and the pastrami had been thickly sliced and heated on the flat griddle, which did not diminish the flavor, even adding a slight caramelized taste that complemented the smokiness of the brisket.

The drawback: no grainy mustard!
The solution: Gray's Papaya is 20 feet away. Duck in and cop a squirt.

The halal cart has become a fixture on this quintessential Upper West Side corner.
