Eater reported yesterday that 11-year-old Alias, which once made our list of best restaurants on the Lower East Side, will shutter on Saturday to make way for tapas and seafood restaurant Black Crescent, pending that concept's liquor license approval.

We're sad to see it go. This neighborhood joint did a busy brunch business, when couples would post up with the Sunday paper and linger over bottomless cups of coffee, bloody Marys, and huevos rancheros. Dinner pulled a truly local crowd--especially on Sundays and Mondays when it offered a simple prix fixe menu--and Alias was an ideal respite when you didn't feel like waiting for scenier tables in the area.

But we were especially drawn to the restaurant for its Blue Plate Special, a weekly offering available Tuesday through Thursday that netted you a generous entree plus a glass of wine or beer, dessert, and coffee for 20 bucks. It was a relatively inexpensive way to treat yourself in the middle of the week and a good excuse not to just order take-out.

This week, Alias is hosting celebratory farewell dinners on its regular Blue Plate Special nights, which seem like a good reason to go say goodbye to the institution with one last hurrah. The festivities will culminate in a final farewell blow-out on Friday night.
