Silver Moon Bakery's Fig and Pepper Bread, One of Our 100 Favorite Dishes

Until then, you can get a taste of our contenders as we count down, in no particular order, our 100 favorite dishes from around the boroughs, a list of laudable eats worth tracking down right now.

No. 89: Fig and pepper bread from Silver Moon Bakery

A line twisted out the door and beyond the patio at this 13-year-old Upper West Side bakery when we stopped by last Saturday, and no, the people in it weren't waiting for an imitation cronut. Most of them, like us, ordered a couple of cookies and croissants from the pastry case. But most of them, like us, were also there to pick up a loaf of bread. Silver Moon turns out stunning crusty (though never hard) baguettes with warm, chewy, tightly crumbed but still-light centers, available in everything from classic white--which will please die-hard traditionalists--to inventive special varieties like chocolate-orange and date-nut. We're partial to the fig and pepper version, which complements the fresh-baked flavor with bits of sweet, earthy fig and a back palate tickling hit of cracked black pepper. Pair it to a cup of coffee, and it's all we need for a morning meal.
