No. 67: Ice cream (any ice cream) from Ample Hills Creamery

We've been on a frozen treat tear this summer (exhibit a, exhibit b, exhibit c, exhibit d)--but how could you blame us? Until the heat blessedly broke a couple of days ago, the prospect of eating something even lukewarm was revolting. And besides, there are places like Ample Hills Creamery in this city, the line for which we'd be tempted to brave even in the dead of winter. This Prospect Heights ice cream-monger makes good, old-fashioned American ice cream, churning high-quality dairy into a vast array of inventive and excellent flavors. First-timers should not forgo the classic salted crack caramel, which studs salted butter caramel ice cream with bits of cookie made of Saltine crackers and chocolate; after that, venture into cinnamon-and-chile-imbued Mexican hot chocolate, pistachio-brittle-infused pistachio ice cream, or an inventive one-off made with breakfast cereal or beer. We'd choose a very favorite flavor but we can't--we're enamored of all of it.

Later this year, we'll pen our Best of New York issue, our annual love letter to what's great in this town. When that paper hits the streets, you'll find our picks for the very best this city has to offer when it comes to dozens of cuisines, restaurants, dishes, and drinks. Until then, you can get a taste of our contenders as we count down, in no particular order, our 100 favorite dishes from around the boroughs, a list of laudable eats worth tracking down right now.
