Mezcal, Ribs, and Fourth of July Festivities: What's Happening This Week
This week, we ring in a new month and celebrate the birth of our nation (and hopefully, many of you are getting a long weekend). Here's a look at some of our favorite events coming up in the next few days.
Nathan's Famous Nathan's Famous in Coney Island, a landmark in competitive eating
Journey to Oaxaca's Mezcals, Zengo, Monday, 6 p.m.
For $40, sample 10 of Oaxaca's famed mezcals as well as a special cocktail at this instructional tasting. Distillers and brand ambassadors will be on hand to answer questions about what to look for when choosing this agave spirit; antojitos--a selection of Mexican street snacks--are included in the ticket price.
Our Nixon outdoor movie screening, Socrates Sculpture Park, 32-01 Vernon Blvd, Queens, Wednesday, 7 p.m.
Socrates Sculpture Park is showing movies all summer long, and this Wednesday, it features Our Nixon, a film composed of footage taken from the home videos of several Nixon white house aides. The reason it's on our list? Long Island City favorite The Strand Smokehouse offers concessions like pulled pork nachos and bacon-wrapped hot dogs during the screening.
98th Annual Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot-Dog-Eating Contest, 1310 Surf Avenue, Brooklyn, Thursday, 10:30 a.m.
Returning champions Joey Chestnut and Sonya Thomas looks to defend their titles and shatter records--mostly their own--at this iconic New York gathering. Free to the public, the event will feature a variety of musical performances throughout the day, and this may be the only time you'll see adults eat like children.
Unlimited Ribs, MexiBBQ, 37-11 30th Avenue, Queens, Thursday, all day
If you didn't register for the hot-dog-eating contest this year, no need to pout. MexiBBQ is celebrating Independence Day with an all-you-can-eat pork ribs feast for $19, and you don't have to race anyone to take part in the gluttony. Wash down your racks with one of 48 beers on tap.
Fourth of July Dinner, Chelsea Brewing Company, 59 Chelsea Piers Roadway, Thursday, 5 p.m.
There's nothing quite like a great fireworks display to cap off a great evening, especially after you've eaten a nice meal. Chelsea Brewing Co. is offering a dinner-and-drink package that also gains you access to the restricted fireworks viewing area on Pier 59. Take a tour of the brewery in between courses to learn more about what goes into this spot's beers. Fireworks are scheduled to begin at 9:15 p.m.; order $175 tickets by calling 212-336-6440 or e-mailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
