Franny's Antipasto Plate, One of Our 100 Favorite Dishes

No. 59: Antipasto plate from Franny's

In my interview with Johnathan Adler last week, the Franny's chef divulged that the antipasto plate is his favorite dish on the menu because "it's everything that Franny's does on one plate," a well-sourced combination of local ingredients and imports, all prepared and showcased so that the quality of the raw materials shines through. We're fans, especially because it's a display that's well-married and delicious: We'll start with a smear of the soft, slightly sweet mozzarella on toast; the light grassiness of the finishing olive oil adds extra bite. Then it's a nibble of the piquant and savory salame, followed by a verdant, citrus-tinged bite of stewed fava beans and peas. The earthy eggplant caponata, crowned with thin sheets of bittersweet dark chocolate studded with pine nuts is a good way to finish, and then get your palate ready to start all over with a tart, marinated artichoke heart. The plate's an ideal way to begin a meal, and it's a great snack for nibbling while you sip a beer or a glass of wine at the bar.

Later this year, we'll pen our Best of New York issue, our annual love letter to what's great in this town. When that paper hits the streets, you'll find our picks for the very best this city has to offer when it comes to dozens of cuisines, restaurants, dishes, and drinks. Until then, you can get a taste of our contenders as we count down, in no particular order, our 100 favorite dishes from around the boroughs, a list of laudable eats worth tracking down right now.
