King Noodle's Ma Po Tofu Fries, One of Our 100 Favorite Dishes

No. 55: Ma po tofu fries from King Noodle.

After about a decade of once-novel but now-monotonous earnestness in Brooklyn restaurants--which plays out via exposed brick walls, cocktails made from local spirits (or taps pouring locally brewed craft beer), and farm-to-table fare--King Noodle feels like a breath of fresh (or, uh, pot-infused, beer-scented) air. The walls look like a highlighter threw up all over the place, drink choices stop at pitchers of Bud or a flaming scorpion bowl, and the menu reads like it was created in a college dorm room after a few bong rips. But impaired or no, we dig what the place is throwing down, and not just because its sprinkling Nacho Cheese Doritos on the carbonara (which, locavore movement be damned, is genius). Our favorite dish on the board is the ma po tofu fries, a mess of crisply fried potato sticks smothered in mouth-tingling Szechuan peppercorn-infused sauce, molten cheese, cubes of gelatinous tofu, and a tuft of scallions. Unsurprisingly, they eat like chili cheese fries--with enough heat to gradually numb your face.

Later this year, we'll pen our Best of New York issue, our annual love letter to what's great in this town. When that paper hits the streets, you'll find our picks for the very best this city has to offer when it comes to dozens of cuisines, restaurants, dishes, and drinks. Until then, you can get a taste of our contenders as we count down, in no particular order, our 100 favorite dishes from around the boroughs, a list of laudable eats worth tracking down right now.
