No. 47: Handmade pierogies from The Grand

You know what we like? We like it when we head into a neighborhood joint full of regulars chatting up the owner and each other while they knock back their call drinks (which the bartender set before them without exchanging a single word), and the food's at least twice as good as it needs to be. Because that's the kind of restaurant we're going to head back to when we have nowhere to be at all. And that's the case at The Grand, a three-month-old Williamsburg spot that serves a menu that transcends bar food without crossing into pretentious or over-composed territory. You might start with a tray of clams--imbued with the cold depth of the ocean--and a basket of hot wings, which the owners perfected before debuting this spot, but whatever you do, don't miss the pierogies. The doughy pockets are stuffed full of soft, chunky potatoes and sharp white cheddar and crisped up around the edges, which provides a nice cracker-like bite. Dip them in the lightly spiced habanero jam and temper the heat with a little tart sour cream. And then sit back, order another drink, and get to know the people around you, because that's what this place invites.

Later this year, we'll pen our Best of New York issue, our annual love letter to what's great in this town. When that paper hits the streets, you'll find our picks for the very best this city has to offer when it comes to dozens of cuisines, restaurants, dishes, and drinks. Until then, you can get a taste of our contenders as we count down, in no particular order, our 100 favorite dishes from around the boroughs, a list of laudable eats worth tracking down right now.
