Cheap drinks from 4 to 8 p.m. and live music make The Way Station a popular hangout any night of the week

The only thing scarier than going to a haunted house this October is watching the price of pints rise. Fortunately, we've found a few places where the art of affordable drinking is still practiced.

Barley & Grain, 421 Amsterdam Avenue

From 5 to 7 p.m., all 12 of this Upper West Side bar's draft beers are half off, including a sweet selection of craft darlings like Captain Lawrence. Grab one to pair with a small plate of mussels or beef poppers also on special; you'll probably have enough cash leftover to spend on one of the 40 single-malt scotches gracing the extensive spirits menu.

Dominie's Hoek, 48-17 Vernon Boulevard, Queens

It's going to be nice enough to sit outside tonight--and the number of nights warm enough for patio drinking are dwindling, which means you should head out to this backyard deck for $3 beers and sangrias until 7 p.m. The bar also features nightly specials like $2 PBRS and $5 beer and shot combos, making it a go-to destination for cheap drinks in the Long Island City area. With all of those drinks, it's a good thing the bar also features a full dinner menu--the burger benedict looks especially satisfying after a drink or two.

Bravest, 700 Second Avenue

A favorite among the FDNY (the bar's decor pays homage to firefighters), happy hour from 4 to 7 p.m. draws in a mix of New York characters who enjoy cheap drinks and camaraderie. All draft beers and mixed drinks are $3, while cans of Bud Light clock in at $2. There's also $3 Shocktops and occasional craft beer promotions featuring the likes of Goose Island. With one of the more neighborly vibes in Murray Hill, this is a great place to pick up a drink--or a firefighter--in a down-to-earth setting.

The Way Station, 683 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn

From 4 to 8 p.m., receive $1 off any drink or indulge in $4 beers and well drinks. The venue frequently features live music with a focus on indie rock, bluegrass, and country, though even more appealing might be the spot's steampunk-heavy interior. The bar pays tribute to Dr. Who with a time machine that doubles as restroom, and a variety of cocktails--such as the Christopher Walken Dead--ensures anyone who steps inside is bound to feel relaxed.
