La Pasadita's Spicy Pork Quesadilla, One of Our 100 Favorite Dishes

No. 18: Spicy pork quesadilla from La Pasadita (Myrtle Avenue and Broadway, Brooklyn)

A taco, sope, or torta might be the natural order from this Bushwick taco truck, but the quesadilla is a surprise hit.

We're not sure what possessed us to order a quesadilla from this venerable taco truck just beneath the tracks at the Myrtle Broadway J stop in Bushwick. A goat taco would have been a more natural ask, or perhaps a bean- and rice-stuffed burrito, a chicken-laden sope, or the tacos de tinga the vendor was advertising via a handwritten sign on a sheet of looseleaf paper taped up in the window. Call it a happy accident, though, because this quesadilla was one of the best quesadillas we've ever had, and that's entirely because it was nothing like the goopy cheddar and flour tortilla combo you'd normally get when you order that item. This was more like a giant taco--a large corn tortilla hugged what was probably one part melted cheese and four parts char-flecked nubs of spicy juice-drooling pork plus a little iceberg lettuce, a couple of slices of tomato, and a finishing smattering of salty queso fresco. We dressed ours with a little bright, spicy green tomatillo salsa, which added a refreshing lift to the rest of the heap. By the way, we've only seen this taco truck parked on this street at night, which makes it an ideal last stop after you've downed your final pint--but a bit of a trek if you don't already find yourself in the neighborhood.

Later this year, we'll pen our Best of New York issue, our annual love letter to what's great in this town. When that paper hits the streets, you'll find our picks for the very best this city has to offer when it comes to dozens of cuisines, restaurants, dishes, and drinks. Until then, you can get a taste of our contenders as we count down, in no particular order, our 100 favorite dishes from around the boroughs, a list of laudable eats worth tracking down right now.
