Recap: Brooklyn Shaken & Stirred 2013
They came, they drank, they ate, and they listened to some rocking Michael Jackson tunes spun by DJ Nutritious. (Yes, really, a DJ named Nutritious at a food event. Almost too much.) This year's Brooklyn Shaken & Stirred event, hosted by Brooklyn Exposed in the white-washed brick space of The Green Building in Carroll Gardens, was a raucous gathering of Brooklyn restauranteurs, spirits-makers, and food enthusiasts.

"There's way more booze here than last year, and much less food," said Greenhook Ginsmiths proprietor Steven DeAngelo, hinting that it was likely to be a tipsy evening for all involved. Table after table served stirred and shaken cocktails, some crafted by restaurants and others made by the distilleries themselves. Locanda Vini e Olii offered a subtle martini with a plump green olive sitting at the bottom of the V-shaped glass. White Pike Whiskey smoked wood chips in a hand-sized smoker to create a chipotle cocktail.
Though the drinks were certainly the event's focus, the dishes served did not disappoint, either. Soft brisket sandwiches from Dinosaur Bar-B-Que were slathered with tangy sauce and melted with each bite, and the tacos from Sembrado were a welcome hit of flavor and spice. Over on the other side of the room, Dino plated crostini topped with mushrooms and another with creamy pate, both perfect pairings for the many high-end pours.
The event successfully celebrated the outstanding products--in both food and drink--coming out of Brooklyn. Buckets were placed around the room for attendees to vote for best cocktail. The winner will be announced next Tuesday, October 15 on the Brooklyn Exposed website.
