We end our countdown of dishes with an oldie but a goodie: a simple bite from an iconic New York spot.

Many restaurants in this city shine brightly for a moment and then flame out quickly, casualties of a dining scene that's ever rewarding the next big thing. But a small handful glow for years, becoming beloved mainstays of their neighborhoods as well as destinations for out-of-towners and locals alike. One of those spots is the Spotted Pig, April Bloomfield's gastropub that's held court in the West Village for nearly a decade. With enough sex appeal to command an hours-long wait even on traditionally slow nights, the cozy two floor space is filled with nooks and crannies, which makes it particularly enticing come fall. You're likely going to order the legendary burger--a juicy behemoth smeared with pungent blue cheese and sided with scads of crispy shoestring fries--but before you dig in, start with the burrata and mushrooms, a British staple that this kitchen treats right. Slices of thick, crisp toast support a rich layer of the cheese, stretchy on the outside and creamy within, plus soft, earthy mushrooms tarted up with plenty of acid to cut the richness of the dairy. A finishing tuft of arugula lends peppery freshness to the finish, making the whole snack eat deceptively lightly--which means you'll still have room for your meaty main course.

We just dropped our Best of NYC issue, our annual love letter to what's great in this town and where you'll find our picks for the very best this city has to offer when it comes to dozens of cuisines, restaurants, dishes, and drinks. As a side dish, you can get a taste of our contenders as we count down, in no particular order, our 100 favorite dishes from around the boroughs, a list of laudable eats worth tracking down right now.
