Animal Farm Buttermilk Tasting Menu/Book Signing w/Diane St Clair, Ardesia, 510 West 52nd Street, Saturday, 2 p.m.
Pancakes. Biscuits. Chicken. Some of the country's favorite dishes incorporate buttermilk into their recipes. Why not learn how to use it for your next dinner party? Author Diane St. Clair along with Saxelby Cheesemongers will discuss the Animal Farm Buttermilk cookbook over a three course buttermilk tasting menu complete with wine and cider pairings. Tickets are $75 and include a signed copy of the book.
Taste of the Seaport, Front Street between Fulton Street and Peck Slip, Sunday, 11 a.m.
This annual fundraiser continues to strengthen the seaport after Hurricane Sandy with family friendly activities, musical entertainment, and, of course, food. Tickets start at $30 and provide five tastes from participating merchants like Acqua and Mark Joseph Steakhouse. Proceeds benefit PS 397 Spruce Street School and local merchants.
Lower East Side Pickle Day, Orchard Street between Delancey and East Houston Streets, Sunday, noon
Barrels of ex-cucumbers will roll out onto Orchard Street for the Lower East Side's annual pickle day party, which also features a home pickling contest. Hosting a rock star lineup of all the major pickle players, the celebration pays tribute to the neighborhood's rich pickling tradition. Potential pickle champs are required to bring at least five individual jars of pickles to the LES BID booth during the festivities. Get Butchered, Alobar, 46-42 Vernon Boulevard, Queens, Sunday, 4 p.m.
In advance of holiday season, chef Michael Berardino will instruct students on the proper way to slice up a whole hog. Whether you're a fan of pork or just want to sharpen your wits, you'll be able to come away with a great non-traditional Halloween activity--and something probably a lot scarier than a haunted house. Craft beer is included in the ticket prices as is a meal after the butchering demo ends. Reservations are $120 per person and can be made by calling the restaurant directly at 718-752-6000.
