Chick P's Shakshuka, Our Cheap Eat of the Day
Shakshuka from Chick P (490 Bergen Street, Brooklyn, 718-783-1525), $9
This belly-warming bowl of stew will fortify you against the cold -- or give you a good base for a beer-fueled night at Barclays Center.
The food at Barclays Center -- culled from some beloved local vendors -- may be nothing to sneeze at, but you're going to drop some cash to eat it. This is still stadium pricing, after all. So if you're looking for a cheap eat in the area (or likewise, if you need a quick bite before an event at BAM or before hopping on a train to Long Island at Atlantic), head to Bergen Street and Sixth Avenue (just off Flatbush), where you'll find a glorified hallway that turns out a solid board of Middle Eastern food, almost all of which come in at budget-friendly prices. The sandwiches stuffed with falafel are a good bet if that's what you're craving (we recommend the deluxe, which is loaded up with hummus, Israeli salad, tons of pickles, and tahini), but it's the shakshuka for which we'd travel. The savory tomato and pepper stew is threaded with tongue-tingling spice (the kitchen says it uses jalapeños), tempered by the runny yolk of a pair of sunny side up eggs. Grab your spoon and go to work -- the dish will warm your belly and get you ready for what's to come no matter what kind of night you have planned.
