Eisenberg's, Well, Just About Anything, Our Cheap Eat of the Day

Just about anything from Eisenberg's Sandwich Shop (174 Fifth Avenue, 212-675-5096), $2.50-$10

In the center of Manhattan, this diner still turns out an affordable menu packed with old New York classics.

Eisenberg's has been raising NYC's cholesterol since 1929, the restaurant proudly proclaims on its website and menu. And it's been doing that cheaply: Even as prices have climbed in other delis and diners around town, this Flatiron joint has turned out pastrami sandwiches, meatloaf platters, and even bagels with lox for well under 10 bucks. In fact, nothing on the menu is priced higher than $12 -- and dishes that reach that mark often come with all manner of sides. We frequently opt for the $10 pastrami sandwich, the $8 whitefish salad sandwich, the $7.50 tuna melt, or a cup of $4 Manhattan clam chowder. The latter is served only on Fridays, but you can pair it to an egg cream and still get out of there feeling thrifty.
