Biang's Lotus Root Salad and Spicy Cumin Lamb Noodles, Our Cheap Eat of the Day

biangnoodles.jpg

Lotus root salad and spicy cumin lamb noodles from Biang! (41-10 Main Street, Queens), $5.50 and $7.75

Treat yourself to the addicting tingle of Biang's noodles -- and convince a friend to come along to Flushing so you can share a lotus root salad, too.

Let's say that you're welcoming the next two days off as a quiet holiday instead of heading off to your home town for family-oriented festivities. Or perhaps you're entertaining a house full of eaters bent on eating oddities (this being New York and all). Then this might be a good time to treat yourself to a 7 train ride out to Flushing and a stop at Biang!, the upscale sibling to the prolific Xi'an Famous Foods Chain. While the digs here are decidedly more refined than the sparse counters of Xi'an, the prices remain low: Only three things on the menu climb above $10. You'll probably want a noodle dish -- we recommend the spicy cumin lamb noodles, a plate of thick, chewy hand-pulled pasta strands doused in mouth-addling chili and cumin -- but if you can wrangle a friend into sharing a couple of dishes, we'd add the bright, spicy, and crisp lotus root salad, too. Be forewarned: This spot is cash only.
