Cheap Drinks at Allswell, Open Door, Smithfield, and Saints Tavern
The snow may be gone, but it's freezing outside -- so perhaps you need somewhere to warm up. Here are a few places that will provide shelter while hooking you up with cheap drinks.
>Courtesy Saints Tavern An all day and night happy hour plus fried oreo beignets? Yup that's heaven
Allswell, 124 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn
From 4 to 7 p.m., head into this darkly lit cavern on your way home from work where you'll find $3 Tecates, $4 Brooklyn Pennant Ales, and $1 oysters. Lucky Seven cocktails are $7 (you saw that coming), while those who come hungry can select from a few rotating specials like a crispy chicken sandwich with fries and beer for $13.
Open Door Gastropub, 110 John Street
Drop into this FiDi bar between 4 and 7 p.m., and you'll be treated to a two-for-one martini deal in addition to a daily $5 beer offer, two-for-one select wines, and a $6 hot toddy (that last one seems ideal for a day like today). Or come with a group and order a mini keg (three-person minimum).
Smithfield, 215 West 28th Street
Need a quick pint before heading off to Penn Station? From opening until 8 p.m., Heineken and Newcastle Brown Ales are $5. You'll find house wine and well drinks for $5, too, as well as soccer matches and upcoming World Cup games featured prominently on the bar's big screen.
Saints Tavern, 79 St. Mark's Place
If you're having the particular type of rough day that's causing you to look at happy hour as your personal mardi gras, this N'awlins theme bar is the place for you. Specials run all day and night and include $4 pickle backs, $3 pints of Carlsberg, and $5 house mixed drinks, which means it's dangerously cheap to drink until you forget your woes. There's also plenty of food if you're planning on posting up at the bar for hours upon end: Fried pickles, popcorn shrimp, and fried oreo beignets (!) are all available to soak up the booze.
