Gumbo from the Cowgirl Seahorse (259 Front Street, 212-608-7873), $5.95-$9.95

Life always feels light at the Cowgirl Seahorse, which is dressed up for the holiday season. Saddle up for a bowl of hot gumbo and drink it all in.

We put the Cowgirl Seahorse on our list of recommendations for where to eat near many of New York City's holiday festivities -- and then took our own recommendation and popped by today, finding extra reason to head there before the end of December: The place is decked out for Christmas, complete with thematic soundtrack. If you work downtown, this is a nice place to gather for a post-work beer and snack, since the menu is heavy on wallet-friendly snacks. For a cheap meal, fill up on a cup or bowl of the gumbo: The thick stew swims with sausage, chicken, and shrimp, and packs just enough spice to make your nose run and your brow sweat -- not such a bad thing when you're trying to get warm from the arctic chill. A finishing scoop of brown rice adds a nice bit of extra heft.

I got food poisoning on a Sunday after eating the gumbo. It was horrible. Be careful unless you want to dry heave all night....
