Falafel sandwich from Taïm (222 Waverly Place, 212-691-1287), $6.25

Even if you're unconcerned with saving a few bucks, this West Village Middle Eastern spot should be on your list.

Whether you're pinching pennies or not, you should put Taïm on your list -- the pint-sized counter-service joint in the West Village makes some venerable Middle Eastern street food, and it's worth popping into so that, if nothing else, you can compare it with the handful of other joints that vie for the title of best falafel sandwich. And if you are trying to save a few bucks on dinner, the falafel sandwich here is a sizable meal that will set you back just $6.25 (and the rest of the menu, save for a few platters, is priced below 10 bucks). Choose your falafel flavor (green imbued with parsley, cilantro, and mint; red gets its hue from roasted red peppers; and harissa comes spiked with a little heat), and then watch as the team compiles your sandwich, stuffing a pita with the crisply fried globes, bright tomato and cucumber Israeli salad, a little pickled cabbage, and a generous drizzle of zippy tahini. You can add more pickles, spicy s'rug sauce, and mango chutney at no charge if you'd like; pair your meal with a brown sugar lemonade, and you'll still come in under budget.
