What's Happening This Weekend: Tamales 101, Drinks by Donna, Cookie Decorating, Tastings at Brooklyn Libary
The week's almost at an end, and if you haven't been stuck in line at a major transit hub by now -- or missed your flight thanks to holiday traffic -- perhaps you'll be sticking around for the weekend. If you do, use your time wisely at a few of these events.
Tamales 101, Bowery Culinary Center at Whole Foods, 95 East Houston Street, Friday, 7 p.m.
Dining on tamales is pretty sweet. But teaching someone how to make tamales? That's an eternal gift. Learn how to properly wrap a corn husk package to create an appetizing sensation. The class will cover how to make a great batter and what to stuff it with. Reserve your spot for $35.
Drinks by Donna, Fatty 'Cue, 91 South 6th Street, Brooklyn, Friday and Saturday, 6 p.m.
The pop-up party continues at the new Fatty Lab, and this weekend features cocktails by fellow south Williamsburg bar Donna. The bar has temporarily closed due to an electrical fire, so the staff will be bringing over suitcases full of shakers and spoons to make some of their specialty drinks. Dinners will be curated by Philadelphia chef John Taus, and reservations and walk-ins will be accepted. The party starts at 6 p.m. both Friday and Saturday evenings.
Holiday Cookie Decorating Class, Sugar Flower Cake Shop Studio , 336 West 37th Street, Suite 950, Saturday, 12:30 p.m.
If you're looking for a romantic holiday date idea, baking and decorating your own cookies is pretty sweet no matter how the baked goods end up tasting. Amateur pastry chefs will have the chance to bake, cut, and decoratively frost cookies during the two hour session, though getting your treats home without them falling apart is totally up to you. The class is $60 per person, and children over the age of eight are welcome to attend. Tickets can be purchased through the baking studio's website.
Tastings at Brooklyn Art Library, Brooklyn Art Library, 103A North 3rd Street, Brooklyn, Saturday, 8 p.m.
This artistic event highlights local Brooklyn businesses. Wine courtesy of Brooklyn Oenology and Mast Brothers Chocolate will be passed out while attendees check out the library's current exhibit. Tickets are $5.
