Lam Zhou's Noodles and Dumplings, Our Cheap Eat of the Day

Noodles and dumplings from Lam Zhou (144 East Broadway, 212-566-6933), $2-$5

The noodles here are destination-worthy, but if you're really tight on money, the dumplings are a screaming deal.

In most Manhattan neighborhoods, you have to dig a bit to find the cheap eats -- skyrocketing rents mean that frugal meals are fewer and farther between. Unless you're in Chinatown, of course, where, at least for now, the noodle stalls, dumpling houses, and dim sum parlors are plentiful, and so, too, are your options for dining without departing with your entire paycheck. One excellent stop: Lam Zhou. We've touted this eatery's beef noodle soup before -- the thin, hand-pulled noodles float in a murky broth bobbing with tender hunks of meat. It'll inoculate you against the cold, and it'll cure illness, too. But if you're really strapped for cash -- like, you're digging through every stitch of clothing for enough coins to make two bucks -- then opt for the dumplings, thin-skinned and stuffed with juicy, pungent pork. Eight of them cost just $2; 12 go for three bucks.
