Choza Taqueria Brings Ceviche and Margaritas on Tap to Gotham West Market
Choza Taqueria first started slinging its tacos, burritos, and tamales in 2010, eventually expanding into a pair of locations, one on MacDougal Street and the other on Madison Avenue. Now, in preparation for a third outpost in Gotham West Market (600 Eleventh Avenue), it's brought on a new chef and partner, Akhtar Nawab, who's spent time behind the burners at Craft, La Esquina, and Ellettaria.

"I knew Matt [Wagman, Choza's owner] from my old restaurant," Nawab explains of the move. "It was time to focus on new things, so we partnered up and got the Gotham West deal."
The chef has been making changes at the existing taquerias, too, adding some items and tweaking others. But at the new outpost, the duo will install familiar menu offerings, and they'll also introduce new dishes specific to that location. "It's a bigger facility, so we can do some different stuff," says Nawab. He cites a ceviche bar, where he'll offer things like a mahi mahi ceviche with hearts of palm, poblanos, and passionfruit; a new chicken taco; and chicharrones and tacos made from a whole roasted suckling pig.
"We're really excited," says Nawab. "It's a different kind of operation from the other two places. We'll have neighbors of really high caliber serving high quality stuff. It's great to be part of that, to push ourselves to do something exciting and different."
You'll be able to pair your food to Mexican beers and margaritas poured on tap, or you can opt for a fresh juice.
The vendor joins a line-up of eateries that includes Ivan Ramen, El Colmado, and the Cannibal, and it takes the place of Little Chef, Caroline Fidanza's luncheonette stand that shuttered a couple of months back.
Choza is slated to open in mid-June, and it will serve breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late-night eats.
