Starting This Weekend, You Can Feast Your Way Across Governors Island
Governors Island has been undergoing major revitalization since 2012, and work's not scheduled to finish there for another couple of years. But this summer, you'll have a new tasty reason to go check out the transformation: Beginning this weekend, a number of vendors from around the city will descend on Kings Avenue each Saturday and Sunday (and also Memorial Day, the fourth of July, and Labor Day), peddling their edible wares.
Live Fast Group Sweet Chili will bring its food truck to Governors Island this summer.
"We've put together a great group of vendors that a lot of people know," says Ben Goldberg, CEO of the Live Fast Group, which put together the food line-up for the summer. "We sought out many different flavor profiles. New York is a multicultural city, and we wanted to please everyone."
He cites purveyors like Sweet Chili, the Thai and Vietnamese concept from Top Chef finalist Lisa Fernandes. "It's a really popular truck," says Goldberg. "She does great dishes like silken tofu and green papaya salad." He also calls out El Paso Taco, which does a short rib taco with watermelon pico de gallo. Other participants include sandwich slinger Mayhem & Stout, Yankee Stadium Philly cheesesteak seller Carl's Steaks, and Momos & Buns, which turns out Tibetan dumplings and bao. And the Live Fast Group plans to rotate in new vendors to keep the offerings fresh.
Hit the party this weekend -- or any other weekend throughout the summer -- and you can wander through the tents and taste the food while you take in views of downtown New York. The summer fest is part of the city's drive to get Governors Island open 365 days a year, and it should become part of the annual programming here after this inaugural year.
Vendors will be on site from 10:30 a.m. until 7 p.m. each weekend day through the end of September. Keep up to date on what's happening at the fest via the Governors Island Food Twitter account.
