Dish no. 77: Marillenpalatschinken at Café Sabarsky (1048 Fifth Avenue, 212-288-0665)

Located on the first floor of the Neue Gallerie on upper Fifth Avenue, Café Sabarsky is the great hidden gem along what is often called Museum Mile. The place is styled after a turn-of-the-century Viennese café, and it serves excellent Bavarian fare for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And the best time to enjoy Sabarsky is on a quiet weekday morning, when you can eat your meal in peace while overlooking the park. Order the marillenpalatschinken, a crepe filled with homemade apricot preserves that is worth the trip alone. Served on a cold plate and lightly dusted with powdered sugar, the just-sweet preserves contain chunks of apricot that contrast with the softness of the fresh baked crepe. Even in the dead of winter, the dish tastes fresh, and year-round, this is just what you want to start your day. It's a simple dish that shines every time.

In advance of our 2014 Best of NYC issue, we're traipsing through the boroughs and divulging our favorite dishes of the year. They're presented here as a countdown, but we're listing them in no particular order. Consider this a guide to what's good to eat in this town right this very second.
