Here Are the Five Best Food Events in NYC This Weekend
The Green Fairy of Brooklyn, Atlantic Cellars, 908 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, Friday, 6 p.m.
Doc's All Natural Spirits proprietor Kevin Herson is bringing out some of his homemade absinthe to help guests kick back on a Friday evening. The complimentary tasting is scheduled to run until 9 p.m. Learn more about the absinthe-making process and Herson via our video Doc's All Natural Spirits Is Absinthe Distilled in a Harlem Basement.
City of Water Day, Governor's Island/additional locations, 10 South Street -- Slip 7, Saturday, 10 a.m.
A celebration of the city's waterfront, this free festival includes free boat tours on everything from schooners to fireboats as well as cardboard kayak races for the kids. Activities are planned at a variety of locations throughout the city, and you'll be able to sample bites from mobile food favorites like Calexico and CoolHaus.
Coney Island on Tap Beer Festival, MCU Park, 1904 Surf Avenue, Brooklyn, Saturday, 1 p.m.
Here's your chance to enjoy some cold suds at a ballpark without the threat of a ball landing in your cup. Nearly 60 American craft breweries will descend upon Coney Island to showcase over 100 varieties of brews, and guests are privy to an unlimited number of samples during a three hour session. The event will also have food available for purchase and a live performance by the band Wild Adriatic. Ticket packages start at $40 for those planning to drink; there are also $10 tickets for those staying sober.
A Taste of Germany, Queens Historical Society, 14335 37th Avenue, Queens, Sunday, 2:30 p.m.
Instead of celebrating the World Cup finalist by standing shoulder to shoulder inside a crowded bar -- which you can do virtually anywhere on Sunday -- consider recording the game and feasting on German food instead. This event will also showcase the nation's musical and cultural influences, while guests can view the museum's latest exhibit, Remembering Yesterday: Queens and its World Fairs. Tickets are $15 and include food and one beverage.
Fourth Annual Pie Eating Contest, Astor Bakeshop, 12-23 Astoria Boulevard, Queens, Sunday, 3 p.m.
If the annual hot dog eating contest inspired you to become a competitive eater, step up to the plate by chowing down on pie. Men and women will each compete in their own category, and teens between the ages of 12 and 16 will also go head to head for the title of young champion.
